By Word Of Mouth » The legend of the love of Enlik and Kebek
Our country is rich in various legends, which are still formed by the people of Kazakhstan to this day.
When I was 6 years old, my grandmother took me to her native land of her ancestors, the homeland of the great Kazakh poet, writer Abay Kunanbayev and Kazakh writer, playwright and scientist Mukhtar Auezov.
We traveled to our native places, where my great-grandfathers on my mother’s side lived – their family was the Tobykty. To shorten the long journey in the endless steppe, they told me different stories and legends.
I especially remember the legend about the tragic fate of two young people.
The legend goes like this. At that time, among the Tobykty tribe there were very brave batyrs, one of them was Kebek. He was distinguished by his heroic strength, courage and desire for feats.
One day a guy wanted to know what awaited him in the future, and went to a fortuneteller who lived in the mountains. He predicted the batyr’s death because of the girl. After some time, Kebek went hunting. He got lost and wandered into an auyl, where he met a girl of wonderful beauty named Enlik. Kebek managed to win the girl’s heart. The young fell in love with each other. But the girl was betrothed to an old man from Kerey tribe. They could not get married; ancient cruel customs did not allow this to happen. And they decided to escape.
One night they escaped and hid in the mountains for a long time. They became husband and wife and had a son.
But the girl’s tribe could not agree with this – the young couple’s escape was accepted as a betrayal, and revenge to the Kebek tribe began. Hostility began – they stole cattle, burned the yurts.
The girl’s tribe gathered rich and elders people and decided to punish the fugitives. One biy was very strict and cruel, and he sentenced the lovers to death. They searched for the young couple for a long time and found them in the mountains among the rocks. They were tied with a rope around their necks and tied to a horse, torn them to death.
Before her death, Enlik asked her relatives not to abandon their little son to the mercy of fate and to bury her with her husband in the same grave. After the funeral, no one took their son in; even the girl’s parents were afraid of the old customs.
After many years, the people, who retained in their memory the legend of love between Enlik and Kebek, began to compose songs and write poems about them.
I visited the monument, it is located near the Semey highway, Karaul village.
It turns out that in the sixties, a monument was erected over the grave of lovers, where young people come before getting married.
All passers-by leave the highway to worship the great and bright feeling of love, which knows no barriers.
