The Alkabek River is a tributary of the Irtysh, and people have also made a legend about it.

A long time ago, when 7 suns were rising in the morning sky, and there was no cold on earth, a girl Ulasty and a young man Alkabek lived in these parts. She was famous for the beauty of Blasts. People admired her light gait. They said: she walks so that even the grass does not crumple under her feet. There was a rumor about Alkabek as a brave, determined horseman.

One day, by chance, in a blooming meadow, where the shepherd Alkabek was tending a flock of sheep, a girl and a young man met. The stately, majestic horseman conquered the heart of the proud Blasty. But Alkabek did not notice her love. For a long time, Ulasty hid her feelings. When spring came and the valley bloomed in the gentle rays of the seven suns, the heart of the beautiful girl trembled. She decided to open up to her lover. She climbed into the mountains of Ulasty, handed the young man a scarlet flower – a fiery symbol of love.

Only the horseman refused the maiden’s gift. He turned away and left without once looking back at the saddened girl. Then the beautiful Ulasty waved her hands and flew into the air, turning into a golden squint bird.  And Alkabek, who did not accept her love, turned into a cold river.

The bird flew away to distant lands beyond the high mountains. But every spring the golden squint returns here.

They say that this proud beauty of Ulasty appears to cast at least one glance at her beloved Alkabek.
