Batyr Kushikbay’s Pass

By word of mouth » Batyr Kushikbay’s pass

On the way to the village of the great poet Abay in the Semipalatinsk steppes there is a pass of Kushikbay.

In winter, it is especially difficult to cross this pass. A cold wind blows there all winter, or it snows, and everything sweeps around. And when there is a blinding snowstorm on the pass, people usually say: “Batyr Kushikbay is angry!”

As people say, in ancient times, Batyr Kushikbay lived here. He was so brave and courageous that it is impossible to find a second such person, equal to him in courage. His enemies were very afraid of him, and the villages that were under the protection of Kushikbay were bypassed without even approaching them.

And one day Kushikbay fell seriously ill and went to bed. Enemies who had been sharpening their teeth on him for a long time found out about this, decided to attack and destroy his village. And at the same time, if possible, to destroy the most hated batyr. And so the enemy detachment attacked the defenseless inhabitants of the village.

In impotent rage that he could not get up due to illness, Kushikbay lay and expected the worst… And now the enemies appeared already in the very center of the village, rampaging and exterminating people.

Seeing with his own eyes the disaster in which his people found themselves, Kushikbay became angry at himself, at his illness, then at all together, and above all at the ruthless enemies, got out of bed, and in one undershirt, barely throwing a sheepskin coat over his shoulders, jumped on a horse.

The enemies, seeing that Kushikbay opposed them, were very scared, rushed to flee, but it was all in vain…

Kushikbay was very angry, rushed to strike and chop the hated enemy army. For several passes, Kushikbay drove the enemies away. After the fight, the batyr felt bad and decided to lie down on one of the passes. Since then, he has been lying in that place, not getting up, the disease took him away.

And that pass bears his name, and as a sign of his strong character on stormy days, people say: “Kushikbay is angry again!” Angry, cordial, angry at enemies who do not give the batyr peace.
