(Written from the words of Yellow Turlybaev)
In ancient times, not far from Ust-Kamenogorsk, in the foothills of the Kalbinsky Highlands, in the Ulan district, there were nomads of shepherds and herdsmen. In these parts, shoals of horses and herds of sheep belonged to Sarykul.
As it is conducted, each herd had its own leader – the strongest stallion. Sarykul also had a beautiful mottled stallion – Saryalaaygyr, which means a red-mottled stallion.
As it should be, he watched his herd so that the mares did not run away, and the wolves did not attack. But the real scourge for the Kazakhs in those years were the few wolves everywhere, and jute. It was a real, big natural disaster… In such years, a lot of cattle died, and shepherds had to cut down tree and shrub thickets during the feeding season in order to somehow hold out until spring. At such a time, the icy hills did not give in to the snow, herbs for livestock turned out to be inaccessible and animals died of exhaustion.
In such cases, the herders relied, sometimes, on the flair of the leaders of the herd. The stallions, wise in life, had a premonition of what winter would be like and led herds to places where jute could be experienced.
So it was that year. The owner of the herd – Sarykul decided to trust his old stallion – Saryalaaygyr. The stallion already sensed the impending trouble and went himself to choose a valley where he could graze during the expected jute. He went and looked for such a place and brought a herd with him. Sarykul and his people also migrated. Such a place turned out to be the Sary-Ozek Valley, not far from Ust-Kamenogorsk in the Ulan district. Here, in the Almasai tract, the village was broken up. The intuition of the stallion Saryalaaygyr, did not deceive. This was the beginning of a new village in the valley of a small river Sary-Ozek.
