Mount Tarbagatai

In ancient times, this mountain was inhabited by Kalmyks who conquered Kazakh lands. But at night, this place was very inconvenient for living and resting. The marmots living there barked shrilly all night and did not give people any peace or rest. The Kalmyks call the marmots «tarbyga» and the mountain – «tai». Thus, this mountain peak began to be called «Suyrlytau», that is, «Tarbagatai». This name of the mountain has remained unchanged to this day.
